Finding 01: agree the net sales definition
Illustrative August period, one GBP entity, excluding VAT. The sales dashboard shows gross orders while the finance comparison uses orders after refunds and discounts.
- Gross orders in the dashboard
- £400,000
- Refunds in the agreed period
- £30,000
- Discounts in the agreed period
- £5,000
- Net sales on the agreed basis
- £365,000
£400,000 − £30,000 − £5,000 = £365,000
The £35,000 difference is explained by the reporting definition. It is not a saving or additional revenue.
01Trace the evidence
Record the Sales Overview report, its Sales measure and the Orders, Refunds and Discounts source extracts. Match entity, dates, currency and VAT treatment before comparing totals.
02Specify the change
Label gross orders separately and add the agreed net sales measure. Link refunds and discounts to their source records and document the reporting-period rule.
03Set the acceptance check
Compare the proposed measure with the £365,000 source reconciliation, test sampled records and a second period, and ask the finance owner to sign off the definition.
You can approve a defined reporting change with a test for completion, then use the agreed sales basis when reviewing performance against target.
Illustrative recommendation: the review specifies the change and test. Implementation and sign-off follow in the commissioned build.
